The iTeach ecosystem, developed by the Institute for Education (Bucharest) and Social IT, constitutes Romania’s most comprehensive digital infrastructure for teacher professional development, integrating over a dozen interconnected platforms, journals, and tools that collectively serve more than 37,000 educators across K–12 and higher education in Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
The components of the ecosystem
The ecosystem is anchored by iTeach.ro (also accessible as suntProfesor.ro), a socio-professional network for K–12 teachers offering free online courses, professional portfolios, blogs, surveys, debates, and a gamified points system. Around this hub, the ecosystem extends into five major functional domains: open educational resources (a digital repository and an advanced authoring tool), digital competence assessment, scholarly publishing, educational news, and higher-education CPD.
Open educational resources are hosted on Digitaledu.ro, a national platform containing over 15,000 OERs – learning activities, digital worksheets, simulations, and educational games – created by teachers, reviewed by specialists, and eligible for official accreditation by the Ministry of Education. The platform has been a member of the European Educational Repositories Network (EdReNe) since 2019. Complementing it is Ariadna.app, an authoring tool for collaboratively creating, distributing, and monitoring the use of OERs, with SCORM export capabilities.
Digital competence assessment is handled by DigCompEdu.net, a self-assessment tool based on the European Commission’s DigCompEdu framework that evaluates teachers across 22 competences in six domains. Accessible via iTeach credentials, it has been collecting longitudinal data since 2021. An occasional flash report analyzing over 2,000 teachers found a mean digital proficiency score of 53.6% (intermediate level).
Scholarly publishing comprises four educational journals for K-12 teachers, integrated into the platform’s submission infrastructure:
- EDICT – Revista educației (ISSN 1582-909X), an international education journal published since 2001 by Agata Publishing House with institutional support from the Institute for Education;
- iTeach: Experiențe didactice (ISSN 2247-966X), the ecosystem’s flagship monthly journal promoting practical teaching experiences, published since 2011;
- Revista Profesorului (ISSN 2602-0068), a monthly pedagogical journal published by the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences at the University of Bucharest;
- and Revista de Pedagogie Digitala (accessible at pedagogie-digitala.ro).
A separate periodical is dedicated to higher education professionals and researchers: Journal of Digital Pedagogy (digital-pedagogy.eu), an international peer-reviewed open-access journal focused on digital pedagogy. The Journal of Digital Pedagogy is edited in partnership by the Institute for Education (Bucharest), the Teacher Training Department, Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University (Iasi), and the Teacher Training Department, Faculty of Political Sciences, National School of Political and Administrative Studies (Bucharest).
Educational communication is served by EduVox.ro, an information channel aggregating news, events, conferences, competitions, and announcements for the Romanian education community, and by Educatia-Digitala.ro, a research-oriented portal on digital pedagogy and the digitalization of education (also home to the Ariadna Experiment on AI in education).
Higher-education CPD is addressed through Academia Online (academia-online.ro), a companion platform co-founded in 2003 for university teaching staff.
Additional tools include CertiPass.app (automated digital certificate generation for course and event participants), Cursuri-online.ro (an information hub for online course offerings), and Elearning-forum.ro (a long-standing platform for e-learning, founded in 2001).
